Pāhala Shopping Center retains a 2002 addition of a retro overhang designed by Dutch architect Robert Michelson. This week, ownership of the building and property transferred from 300 Corp. to Edmund C. Olson Trust II. Photo by Julia Neal |
OWNERSHIP OF PAHALA SHOPPING CENTER TRANSFERRED this week from 300 Corp. to Edmund C. Olson Trust II. The sale brings ownership home from the 300 Corp., Baltimore based company founded by the late Harry Weinberg, to Olson Trust in Hawaiʻi. The 300 Corp. also recently sold Nāʻālehu shopping center to a Hawaiʻi based partnership led by Duane Kurisu, whose enterprise owns Punaluʻu Bakeshop and many other properties and businesses in this state.
Pāhala Shopping Center is 41,395 square feet and includes the 7,320 square foot building that hosts Bank of Hawai`i, which opened in 1991, U.S. Post Office in 1995, and Longs Pharmacy in 2013. Resource Land Holdings, Ltd. also keeps a presence in
Pāhala Shopping Center.
Pāhala Shopping Center was built in 1966. Early businesses included the Country Mart, with groceries, a restaurant and soda fountain, operated by the Zanes, the family of the late Dexter Lee. There was Yoshimura Store, with clothing and

fabrics; Dr. Yoshida's dental office and Alice's Beauty Salon, operated by Alice Furusho. Most of the owners of businesses at Pāhala Shopping Center were local entrepreneurs who could walk to work from the houses they built along Ohia Street on land they bought from the old sugar plantation.
Over the years, businesses at
Pāhala Shopping Center included Gloria's Filipino Store and a real estate office connected to SeaMountain at Punaluʻu. Trini Marques opened Aliʻi Bakery & Dining. Yuri Beyer and her family operated Black Sand Video. The Andrade family opened the I Love Jesus Store.
In 2001, Ada Lemme contracted with 300 Corp to open a restaurant and make improvements to
Pāhala Shopping Center. She added a new retro design frontage by Dutch architect Robert Michelson and employed
Pāhala woodworker Michael Worthington for wall details, windows and doors. Her Tex
Pāhala, Home of Ono Kine Food & Malasadas, opened in June, 2002. She later sold Tex
Pāhala to Bradley Westervelt who reopened as
Pāhala Town Cafe. It is now Longs Pharmacy.
In a letter to the businesses at
Pāhala Shopping Center, Olson Trust made the announcement of new ownership, saying, "We are delighted to begin a new relationship with you and your team of employees, managers, contractors and family members." It notes that Edmund C. Olson Trust II owns over 15,000 acres of "conservation, agricultural and commercial land on both Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi" Islands. "The Trust is dedicated to the thriving of Hawaiʻi through sustainable agriculture, managed natural resource conservation and cultural legacy preservation; not to mention community development, education and renewable energy. In short, the mission is to help make Hawaiʻi a better place to live by developing self-sustaining communities that will thrive into the future.
"You are part of our mission," says the letter to
Pāhala Shopping Center tenants. Around Pahala, Olson Trust owns Kaʻū Coffee Mill, coffee orchards and thousands of acres of macadamia. It has long supported the Kaʻū Coffee Festival and
Pāhala Christmas Parade and donated to numerous non-profits in the Kaʻū community, including the school and hospital.
