A MAGNITUDE 4.2 EARTHQUAKE shook the westside of Hawai'i Island today at 7:41 a.m. U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported the epicenter at 45 miles west-northwest of Kalaoa, Kona  0.6 miles deep. See the map on HVO’s website at  https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/earthquakes.  Also see the National Earthquake Information Center website at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/hv72569232/. The USGS “Did you feel it?” website (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/dyfi/) received over 75 felt reports within the first hour of the
earthquake.
HVO Scientist-in-Charge Ken Hon said, “The earthquake was likely due to readjustment of the oceanic plate from the weight of the island chain and poses no significant hazard. The earthquake had no apparent effect on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that no tsunami was generated by the earthquake.”

FIVE BILLS ESCAPED GOV. DAVID IGE'S VETO with an override by the state legislature on Tuesday. In addition to overriding the bill that cuts back the county share of the Transient Accommodations Tax and allows counties to add on more tax, the Legislature managed to override the following:
Senate Bill 263, which focuses on economic development and the Hawaii Made program; SB 404, which changes the law on electioneering communication; SB 811, which requires Department of Education to hand in weekly reports on COVID-19 cases; and SB 1387 on pet microchips.
In addition, the House and Senate plan to meet tomorrow to finalize and vote on three new bills. HB 54 would provide funds for fixed costs and replenish the rainy-day fund. It would switch from using federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to the state's general funds in order to comply with federal rules. HB 1299 would abolish some special and trust funds and move the balances into the general fund. Ige vetoed the measure, saying parts of it were unconstitutional. SB 589, would structurally change University of Hawai'i Cancer Center. After the governor's veto, the legislature added language concerning jeopardizing existing contracts and the method of appointing a director.
