 THE 140TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FOR KA‘Ū HIGH & PAHALA ELEMENTARY will be held on Friday, Aug. 20. It will also be the day of the school's 
first Farm Festival.
    The school is on the Hawai'i Register of Historic Places and construction for much of it in 1938 was funded by the federal Public Works Administration. The PWA grant amounted to $15,930.
    The project, listed as Docket No. TH-1070-F, was part of the PWA’s non-federal projects expenditure for the Territory of Hawai'i for 1938-1939. "Located in a rural plantation town, the Kaʻū High and KA‘Ū Elementary School consists of several classroom buildings with large lanai and corrugated metal roofs," says the Hawai'i Register of Historic Places report.
     "We invite you to join this community event and kindly ask if you can help spread the word," said one of the anniversary organizers Jen Makuakane. She said there are opportunities for community and business partners to host booths. Those interested in hosting a booth, able to lend a helping hand, or have other organizations in mind,

    Invited are alumni, family and friends and community members who would like to visit the campus. "Stroll down memory lane at the Kaʻū Legacy exhibit." said the statement from the school. Tour the School Farm. Learn about the new Global Learning Lab & Academy of Agri-preneurship."
    Sponsoring organization O Kaʻū Kakou will offer chili, hot dogs, BBQ beef sticks, shave ice and drinks. Live music and hula will be free to the public, along with keiki face painting, a mini school farmstand, ag-education booths and opportunities to help sow seeds and a hydroponics make-n-take workshop.

Comments received by the close of business on Aug. 23 will be taken into consideration when finalizing the APR.
    The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands carries out Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole’s vision of rehabilitating native Hawaiians by returning them to the land. Established by U.S. Congress in 1921, with the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, the Hawaiian homesteading program run by DHHL includes management of over 200,000 acres of land statewide with the specific purpose of developing and delivering homesteading. DOE also plans distance learning options for the school year.

WITH COVID CASES ON THE RISE AND SCHOOLS OPENING AUG. 4 IN KA‘Ū, the state is revising Covid safety rules for educational institutions. Covid patients 18 years and younger are about 20

percent of the case load in Hawai'i, which is higher than the average throughout the pandemic. In addition, more children are hospitalized.

     Department of Health spokesman Brooks Baeher said that new safety rules will align with those handed down by the federal government. That could include wearing of masks on every campus.

    Another issue is that children under 12 are not yet allowed to have COVID shots.

    DOE also plans distance learning options for the school year.

      St. Jude's offers free food and showers, live church services and community outreach in Ocean View. St. Jude's Episcopal Mission is at Paradise Circle - mauka at Keaka. The Sunday service is also broadcast on Facebook through the St. Jude's web page at http://www.stjudeshawaii.org.

     Free hot showers are open to anyone on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12  p.m. Last sign up is at 11:30 a.m. There are two private stalls. The church provides body wash, shampoo and a clean towel. 

    Attendants take the temperatures of the shower users and ask that all wear masks, regardless of vaccination status. The monitors sanitize the shower stalls after each use. However, St. Jude's assumes no liability in the transmission of any illness and posts the cautionary, "Use at Your Own Risk." On Saturdays, free lunches (take out only) are available between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

    St. Jude's is also working with Kaʻū High & KA‘Ū Elementary for educational outreach and better internet for the entire Ocean View Community.
